The study
sought to investigate the influence of chaplaincy services on students’
holistic development. The study was based on the
mixed method research design which is a procedure for collecting, analyzing,
and “mixing” both quantitative and qualitative research methods in a single
study to understand a research problem.
The population of the study consisted of students and chaplains of Boakye Tromo
Senior High Technical School and Bechem Presbyterian Senior High School.
However, a sample size of 370 students was randomly selected from the entire
population. Using the statistical analysis methods of frequency distribution and
regression, the data collected through an interview guide and structured
questionnaire were analysed. The study found that there is a high extent of chaplaincy services
providing spiritual nourishment to the students. The study found that there
was a high rate of provision of counselling services. There was however moderate extent of the
provision of career guidance and counselling services. The findings on the state of discipline showed a
moderate state of discipline, which meant that the discipline was neither bad
nor good, but average. The study also found that chaplaincy services
have a significant positive impact on academic life as well as on the state of
discipline among the selected schools in the study area. Lack of support from
staff members, lack of resources, denominational differences, low patronage of
services by students, and interference from school management were some of the
factors that militated against chaplaincy services. The study recommends that school administrators should improve the services
of the chaplains such as the provision of conducive office facilities and related
matters to enable counselling to be effective.
